The Four C's Of Diamonds

When ascertaining the level of quality of diamonds there are many aspects to take into account, such as general appearance and smoothness. But determining the value of each diamond can only be done by establishing the four C's of diamonds. These four C's are considered to be the be-all end-all of determining the value of all diamonds. By studying each diamond in depth, experts can decide the value judged by specific aspects of each individual diamond. Learning all the skills necessary to judge the value of diamonds can take a lifetime, and there are only a few professional jewelers and gemologists that can give extremely accurate indications of the value of diamonds. These values are dictated by natural conditions of the diamond in itself, rather than what type of jewelry at might be mounted in, or what type of display it might feature.

The four C's of diamonds are basic criteria used when judging the value or price of a diamond. These four measures of criteria take into account the beauty and the price of the potential diamond candidate. Generally, shoppers looking for diamonds consider clarity and color as two of the most important factors when shopping for any type of diamonds. However, the four different criteria, when taken into account, affect the overall value of the diamond in itself.

CUT

The first C is the cut of the diamond, that is the location and how much of the rough diamond that was removed in the cutting process has the most extreme effect on how the diamond itself will eventually look once the cutting process is finished. It is almost more important what is removed than what is left on the diamond surface.

Color

The second C is color, as the tint of the diamond pertains to its beauty, elegance and value. Color is determined on a scale, based on letters of the alphabet from D the all the way up to Z. D is considered the best quality color and Z is considered the worst. This system of determining value by the color involves inspecting the color from white to yellow.

Clarity

Clarity is also one of the criteria, created on a scale, the available classifications are flawless to what is considered many visible inclusions. Clearly basically refers to the amount of inclusions and where they are located inside the diamond.

Carat Weight

The final criteria for deciding the value of the diamond is carat weight. Commonly referred to as a size, carat actually refers to the weight of the diamond itself when placed on a scale and measured. Regardless of the weight, the diamond itself can change sizes without affecting the value in any way.
